Painting and Questioning, Seeing and Kowing ep.contemporary, Berlin, May 9 – June 6, 2026
The exhibition consists of four installations, each with a series of non-representational paintings, in oil on paper from 2019, 2014-2026 and on canvas from 2026.
The first room is defined by a horizontal line of 9×6=54 small-format, sketch-like paintings. On each sheet, a painterly statement — like a detail extracted from the context of a larger picture — is isolated and overpainted with other marks or painting techniques, thereby being questioned or put in doubt.
Six large-format paintings, more than two meters high form the second room, standing closely side by side in their diversity. The paintings here builds in particular on memories of people, situations, and places, which are titled with the verbs hoping, believing, questioning, dancing, knowing and arriving. These words and the memories connected to them, both used as references, thus determine the painter and his painting, as well as the person viewing the picture, their seeing and knowing. A third room, built as a wooden structure, shows a sequence of 9 of the 10 paintings from the series “Live Lines Revisited”. The 960 cm long work from 2014 has now been divided into individual sheets and been overpainted. The Live Lines continue as a linear structure running through all the paintings, which in turn form their own independent motifs. This room is thus a way of dealing concretely with the remnants of time. Live Lines Revisted, 2014/2026 →
Finally, six paintings from the series “Here and There” are hung in the rear part of the gallery, directly beneath the ceiling, inviting one to float and dream. Here too, the layering of thin paint and the placement of markings in thick paint are used. These structures at times take on an object-like quality, forming constellations, merging with seemingly infinite color spaces as compositions on the painted surface, which help define the constructed space.
